About Azad Kashmir

Pakistan's Best-Kept Natural Secret

Azad Jammu & Kashmir โ€” often called “Free Kashmir” โ€” is a self-governing territory nestled in the northeastern corner of Pakistan. Bordered by the mighty Himalayas, it is home to some of the most extraordinary natural landscapes on earth.

From the emerald ribbon of Neelum Valley to the mirror-blue waters of Ratti Gali Lake, every corner of AJK offers a scene that challenges belief. It’s a land where snow-capped peaks tower over terraced orchards, and ancient forts stand watch over rushing rivers.

When you see Neelum Valley for the first time, it looks like a painting in front of you โ€” a landscape almost too perfect to be real.

Culture & Cuisine

Warmth You Can Taste & Feel

The people of Kashmir are as memorable as the mountains. Known for their extraordinary hospitality, locals will welcome you with warmth, stories, and a cup of Kahwa โ€” the fragrant saffron-spiced tea that is Kashmir’s soul in a cup.

Traditional Kashmiri cuisine is rich, slow-cooked, and deeply satisfying. From the famous Rogan Josh to fresh river trout, food here is as much a destination as the scenery.

Before You Go

Essential Travel Tips

01

Best Time to Visit

May through October offers the best weather and road accessibility. July and August are peak season โ€” book accommodation early.

02

Entry Permits

Some remote areas (Shounter Valley, border zones) require a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Arrange this in Muzaffarabad before departure.

03

Getting Around

Rent a 4×4 jeep in Muzaffarabad for mountain roads. Regular cars can struggle on the steep, unpaved tracks leading to top destinations.

04

Cash is King

ATMs are scarce beyond Muzaffarabad. Withdraw sufficient cash before heading into the valleys. Most hotels and shops are cash-only.

05

Mobile Connectivity

Signal is limited or non-existent in remote areas. Download offline maps (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) and key contacts before you go.

06

Pack for All Weather

Even in summer, temperatures can drop sharply at altitude. Pack layers, waterproofs, and sturdy footwear regardless of the season.
